Arbatax is a destination that contains in a few kilometers a great quantity of beauties from the splendid beaches of the Gulf of Orosei and the southern area of Arbatax to the ancient ruins passing through the Gennargentu and the fascinating red rocks. What is there to see in Arbatax and south up to Porto Tramatzu?

What to see in Arbatax

INDEX

1) ARBATAX

There are those who choose Arbatax, those who choose Santa Maria Navarrese and those who choose Barisardo. To discover the central eastern coast of Sardinia we have an excellent variety of HUBs you can rely on. Surely beyond the things to explore in the area there is something to see in Arbatax and a few kilometers outside the city. Do not miss the opportunity to admire the Arbatax tower , also called San Miguel , an imposing fortification of the Kingdom of Sardinia that dominates the beautiful promenade of the village. Another point of interest a few kilometers from the city is the  Capo Bellavista lighthouse, built together with others I would like in the seventeenth century to guarantee the defense and control of its territory. The lighthouse now allows the numerous boats that pass nearby to orient themselves in the seas in front and easily find their route, in addition there is also the weather telepost that monitors the local weather conditions for about 70 km. In addition to a relaxing walk along the seafront, passing by the characteristic and pretty port of Arbatax , you might spot some local fishermen struggling with labor or preparing the fishing equipment. These are just a few things to see in Arbatax and its surroundings, let's continue with archaeological sites and other information.

2) THE BEACHES IN THE AREA

See, live and relax in some of the most beautiful beaches of Arbatax and Sardinia. Even in this part of the coast that goes from the north of Arbatax to Porto Tramatzu in the south east, the amount of beaches present allows you to experience a holiday in Sardinia in the best possible way. Starting from the "city" beach of Cala Moresca (do not confuse with the homonymous one in the Olbia area), to get there there is a path between rocks, trees and finally you come to a concrete ladder to go down to the beach. Further south, the famous and popular beach called Lido di Orrì , a coastline of about 15 kilometers with a succession of coves, sandy beaches but also inlets that bring the mind to a remote area of the Caribbean.

Continuing south I cannot help but mention the beach of Cea , a beach with fine and soft sand, bordered by rocks and surrounded by a fragrant Mediterranean scrub. The fame of Cea is due to two natural monuments of red porphyry 300 meters from the shore, which emerge from the water and are 20 meters high, they are the symbol of the beach. Before the area we describe as the Villasimius area, we mention another beach to take into consideration, the Murtas beach .

Take a 2 minute break and imagine your holiday in Sardinia .....

.... we can make it a reality!

These beaches just mentioned are not the only ones, on the contrary, they are the most popular. Below you will see a sequence of remote beaches that can be reached by car or by trekking and which are located in the immediate vicinity of Arbatax. Don't forget us travel planner we absolutely favor the discovery of remote and off-the-beaten-path areas, but not only that, we recommend the choice of a beach also based on weather conditions (may or may not be exposed to winds), to type of traveler (maybe if you are a family I will prefer to recommend a beach with services rather than a remote one reachable after 50 minutes of trekking) and to yours needs and passions . Choosing our service will be fundamental, before and during your vacation. Enjoy the show.

3) WHAT TO DO (OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES)

It goes without saying that even in this portion of the coast there are endless activities that can be done outdoors both individually and in groups and both do dates and with guides. From classic horseback riding to excursions by boat or raft with the possibility of diving and snorkeling . Coastal treks are also quite popular as are mountain bike trails. In this article, however, I would like to point out 3 activities in particular, the first is a visit to the symbol of this city, the red rocks or the red rocks of Arbatax . It is quite easy to get there also because they are located in the immediate vicinity of the port and therefore of the town center. It will be a spatial panorama, a fantastic natural “cathedral” of red porphyry that creates an enviable contrast both with the emerald water and with the colored and white pebbles present in the bay.

What to see and what to do then, another option is to visit the Bellavista Natural Park through a do-it-yourself excursion, there are 40 hectares of land that are home to animals and plants typical of Sardinian fauna and flora. Among the olive trees, mastic trees and myrtles there are typical animals such as mouflons, little horses of the giara, fallow deer, donkeys, sheep and Sardinian cows, as well as a variety of birds that find a safe refuge in a protected ecosystem. The park is located inside the Arbatax Park Resort but those who are not guests of the resort can also access. Third tip is a ride on the little green train, considered by many to be the most beautiful railway journey in the world. So get ready to leave the car at home and travel about 3 hours of journey that connects Arbatax to Gairo between coastal areas and magnificent internal landscapes up to authentic mountain villages and ghost towns, it will be an incredible emotion.

4) HISTORY AND TRADITION

Also the area of Arbatax, the hinterland and the coastal part up to Porto Tramatzu is popular for the finds of archaeological sites of incredible importance. One above all is certainly the S'Ortali e su Monte complex. During our visit to this complex we were able to admire a fairly complex nuraghe, 2 menhirs, 1 tomb of the giants and another domus de janas, there is also another nuraghe but we did not have enough time to visit it. A complex of absolute importance, the guide, if present, will be able to explain how the nuragics lived, what their lifestyles and habits were, their beliefs and their rituals. Let's say that you will have the opportunity, even here, to discover much more about the ancestors of the Sardinian people.

5) TYPICAL DISHES

There  Arbatax cuisine  and the  cuisine of Ogliastra  they are based on typical dishes from the popular and peasant tradition that highlight the  flavors of both sea and land. First of all the culurgiones , ravioli stuffed with Sardinian cheese, potatoes and spices, are an absolute goodness tasted with tomato, the malloreddus with ragù, the Sardinian pork, but also the roast meat of pork, beef and game. Another interesting dish to taste in this city and its surroundings is Sa Trattalia , or braid of kid's intestines or lamb on a spit. Regarding seafood dishes, the tradition stands out above all the Ogliastrina fish soup , but also all the tasty Sardinian seafood recipes such as spaghetti with sea urchins or with bottarga to name a few. Don't miss Is Pardulas as a typical dessert. What to see and what to eat in Arbatax also through our precious advice within the itinerary.
