ITINERARY DAY 7

MORNING

VIEWPOINT AND VILLAGE OF BUGGERRU

A setting of industrial archaeology overlooking a beautiful coastline.

Buggerru grew out of a mining village founded in 1864. Today it is a tourist center, populated by about 1,000 inhabitants, one-fifth of what it was at the beginning of the 20th century. The present suburb, where the parish church of St. John the Baptist, is made up of houses arranged in a fan shape on the scenic seaward outlet of the valley of Mt. Caitas, a channel named after the Malfidano mine, the most important of the mining epic between the late 19th and early 20th centuries, active until 1979: in just over a century Buggerru, already known to the Romans for silver, produced more than a million tons of zinc and 200,000 tons of lead. Its modern marina is overlooked by the exit of the Henry Tunnel, now an open-air museum, once traversed by a train carrying the mined ore. To complete your knowledge of the mining world here is the Miner’s Museum, the remains of shafts and machinery, villages and trails, residences and management buildings.

AFTERNOON EVENING

CALA DOMESTICA AND CALA LUNGA BEACHES

Two paradises connected with a tunnel in a mountain

Until 1940 minerals extracted from the mines were shipped from here. Like a veritable open-air museum of industrial archaeology, Cala Domestica preserves ruins of warehouses, depots and tunnels dug by miners. One of them on the right of the cove leads to a second secluded, almost intimate cove called Cala Lunga. The largest cove is a deep and delightful inlet, almost a fjord, with a wide and sheltered sandy beach with colors between white, amber and golden, soft and compact. Small shrubs of maquis sprout on the dunes behind the sandy expanse. In front, it overlooks one of the most beautiful seas in Sardinia, with turquoise and azure colors. The towering, white limestone cliffs bordering the beach give the feeling of being in a corner of paradise, where unspoiled nature holds sway. The seabed is shallow and sandy, with the presence of a few rocks offshore and near headlands. You will not hesitate to put on your mask and dive in to admire the extraordinary underwater wealth, with a wide variety of fish swimming in the crystal clear water. It is dominated from above by an 18th-century Spanish tower, about 10 meters high, from which to admire unparalleled views. You will reach it on the promontory to the left of the shoreline via a path from the beach. It was used in the 20th century during World War II as a watchtower.

  • Parking: present for a fee. Any means.
  • Access: For everyone from the paid parking lot located a few meters from the beach.
  • On-site services: Present a bathhouse, bar and restaurant
  • Beach and sea: The sea ranges in color from blue to turquoise, one of the most beautiful on the west coast, with a sandy bottom that becomes deep after a few dozen meters. The sand is a mixture of amber, white, and golden.
  • Wind protection: Exposed to mistral winds.
  • Recommended activities: SUP, kayaking, snorkeling, hiking and trekking.
  • Useful Info: During the summer season we recommend going to Cala Lunga, which is spectacular and less traveled than Cala Domestica.

PORT FLAVIA

Ingenuity, charm and world uniqueness

Ingenuity, charm, and world uniqueness. The story of Port Flavia begins in 1925 . We are located in the territory of Masua in Iglesias, where the local mine is fully operational with a small village dedicated to mining families. From the mine, operating at full capacity by 1860, raw materials (e.g., lead, zinc) were extracted for the supply of the mainland and transported thanks to the large cargoes that ships supplied from the port of Carloforte . Until 1925, however, all loading and unloading was done totally by hand and by wagons. It was a long, difficult and time-consuming process. It was for this very reason that what is currently considered a worldwide unicum was born: Port Flavia. It represents a work of mining engineering carried out in just 2 years between 1922 and 1924 that allowed direct loading of minerals onto ships, drastically reducing transportation time and costs.

DAY 9 (25/07/2022)

ITINERARY DAY 9

MORNING

OLD TRATALIAS

Charm and mystery of the country built twice

“Tratalias is not close to anything.” So begins ‘The End is Known’ (1992): a taxi driver responds to Fabrizio Bentivoglio, heading from Cagliari to the village in lower Sulcis he believed to be closest. The film confirms the initial statement: Tratalias appears to be a town far back in time, shrouded in the unspoiled charm of its thousand-year history. Rising in front of the Gulf of Palmas around the year 1000 (as is the number of its current inhabitants), it experienced its greatest splendor as an episcopal see in the Pisan and Spanish periods and maintained a prominent role until the 19th century. The original hamlet was abandoned in the 1980s, after the construction of the artificial lake of Mount Pranu , whose waters, infiltrating, made the houses uninhabitable. The new town rose a few hundred meters away. The ‘ghost’ village of a few restored stone houses will take you into the enchanted atmosphere of ancient Tatalia, once enclosed by three ‘baroque’ arches-two now intact-perhaps the ancient entrances to the citadel.

  • Cathedral of Santa Maria di Monserrato: Built between 1212 and 1282, seat of the diocese of Sulci from 1218 to 1503 after the abandonment of Sant’Antioco and the coastline threatened by Saracen raids. It is a jewel of Romanesque art with architectural forms unique to the Island. Behind it are artisan workshops, where you will observe live craftsmanship. Prominent in the church square is the Spanish house, whose earliest structure, restored in the 17th century, would date back to the 12th-13th centuries.
  • The Village : Rooms have been added to the original core to house the museum of the tratalian territory. The chariot that carries the simulacrum of the Virgin of Monserrato in procession on Ascension Sunday, a rite dating back to the transfer of the bishop’s seat to Iglesias, is kept here. Every year since then, the statue has been brought back to the village on the festively ‘dressed’ chariot followed by the procession in traditional dress. On the occasion you will taste trataliese cuisine: snails with sauce, cheese ravioli, suckling pig and lamb innards on the spit, accompanied by carignano.
  1. Old Tratalias: Abandoned : The article dedicated to Tratalias by the Sardegna Abbandonata staff.
  2. History of Tratalias Dedicated page directly on the website of the municipality of tratalias

Your dream vacation is in the center of the Mediterranean, in Porto Pino, a masterpiece of nature, an enchanted place so beautiful you can hardly believe it’s so close. From the extensive pine forest, a shelter from the summer heat, comes the name of the locality.

COMPULTITTU

A beautiful gem between Alghero and Bosa

Lazzaretto coves are some small coves located near the Lazzaretto beach. They are small inlets that fit into a beautiful landscape, right on the edge of the Porto Conte park. The conformation characterized by the thick vegetation behind it makes us think of a series of small uncontaminated coves . The distance and isolation make them suitable for the more adventurous .

  • Parking: Small parking lot present (about 10 cars). Very often cars are parked on the side of the road.
  • Access: Not suitable for wheelchair users. There is a marked, downhill path through the Mediterranean scrub that will take you to the beach from the parking lot in about 10 to 15 minutes.
  • Services on site: Totally absent
  • Beach and sea: The beach consists of white sand that is not very fine, dark in color. The sea is a beautiful turquoise-blue expanse in which it is possible to dive in absolute tranquility given the shallow, sandy seabed and crystal-clear waters.
