SAN PANTALEO

The enchanted village of the Costa Smeralda

San Pantaleo is an oasis of peace with a bohemian touch and an artistic soul, to be included without thinking twice in a tour of ancient Ichnusa: in addition to welcoming its visitors with typical Sardinian hospitality, the In fact , the village of San Pantaleo hosts dozens of local and international artists every year who come here to live and create their works, inspired by the unique environment and breathtaking landscapes of the surrounding area. It is a pearl of the emerald hinterland and a place that has managed to preserve its authenticity , despite being a stone’s throw from one of the most popular areas of Sardinia and the wonderful beaches of the Costa Smeralda.

  • Center: The square is certainly the soul of the village, surrounded by the typical Gallura houses and embraced by the shapes of the granite walls that surround the area. Although located in a slightly wild and isolated natural environment, San Pantaleo mixes ancient buildings with modern boutiques and combines genuine artisan shops with avant-garde ateliers to perfection.

MINITOUR
COSTA SMERALDA

a splendid tour in the most exclusive location on the island

Luxury hotels and residences, sparkling nightlife, selected boutiques, aperitifs and elegant evenings. Here is the most exclusive place of relaxation and vacation in Sardinia. Two granite rocks bearing the name will welcome you upon arrival, one to the south, on the road that leads from Olbia to its most famous places, and one to the north, on the road that leads to the blue blazing Baja Sardinia . The Costa Smeralda, with its consortium, founded by the Ishmaelite prince Karim Aga Khan in 1962, invites you to enjoy good food, shopping and a gentle and carefree life in the heart of Porto Cervo , between Golfo Pevero , Pantogia and Capriccioli . The Costa Smeralda is a VIP place and on this magnificent tour you will be able to admire the main attractions.

  1. Rock with Costa Smeralda written : The rock with Costa Smeralda written is now an attraction for tourists , partly also to boast of being on vacation in the famous resort frequented by VIPs and famous people. So famous are the selfies made with the rock. A particular anecdote concerning this rock is told by Guido Piga in his book ” The Great Prince ” on the history of the Costa Smeralda. The Aga Khan , founder and creator of the tourist destination at the beginning of the 1960s, decided to move the stone right after Portisco, which he did not like and did not consider worthy of that name.
  2. Capriccioli: A peninsula in north-eastern Sardinia is dotted with a series of suggestive beaches: it is one of the most famous and popular bays of the Costa Smeralda. In the high season we recommend a quick stop due to the number of swimmers.
  3. Porto Cervo : undisputed capital of the Costa Smeralda , which dsummer becomes an extraordinary and sparkling parade of yachts, yachts and famous people: in the square it is easy to find yourself shopping with movie and television stars. Every day is a continuous alternation of appointments with the international jet set: parties, social life, sporting events, golf in particular. The seaside village was built around a natural inlet that resembles a deer. The old port dates back to the 1960s, when with a brilliant intuition Prince Karim Aga Khan IV , fascinated by the beauty of the coast, decided to buy the lands of this corner of Gallura and, together with the French scenographer Jacques Couelle, later joined by some Italian architects, to give life to the paradise of elite international tourism.
  4. Viewpoint Faro di Capo Ferro: One of the most fascinating lighthouses in Sardinia right along the route of your minitour. The Capo Ferro lighthouse is located a short distance from Porto Cervo , and is an unmissable destination for those who want to take a walk in the midst of nature admiring the sea from a spectacular viewpoint.
  5. Piazzetta 2 sails Baja Sardinia : Born in the 60s, it is called Piazzetta Due Vele in honor of the large sculpture placed in the center of the characteristic brick and granite avenue that has always been the heart of the village. Shops, bars, restaurants overlook the magnificent terrace behind the white beach of Cala Battistoni .

DAY 3 (27/04/2022)

ITINERARY DAY 3

MORNING

ARZACHENA

A stone's throw from the symbol of elite tourism: Costa Smeralda

A place in constant demographic and economic progress, famous for the Costa Smeralda , a symbol of elite tourism born in the 1960s. Today it is a triumph of colors: squares and facades of pink granite and white stone, flowery views and green spaces dotted with boutiques, delicacies and crafts. Arzachena, however, is not only proximity to the Costa Smeralda and the magnificent beaches of incomparable beauty, it is also breathtaking landscapes, rural settlements (stazzi), hills covered with vineyards and archaeological treasures.

  • Historic Center: It is worth taking a walk, a different air characterized by the authentic village with ancient granite houses, today unfortunately partly closed or abandoned.
  • Box of Time : In the historic center it is possible to discover the beauty of the smallest museum in Italy (admission on offer). Here, an old house has become for some years, thanks to the common passion of some friends, a pleasant place for narrating the history of the territory . A special place to get lost … and find yourself!
  • The staircase of the church of Santa Lucia: The small church of Santa Lucia dominates the town and can be reached via a long staircase which in recent years has become another reason that pushes the most curious to go to the center of the town.
  • Rock Il Fungo: A unique spectacle, a cavity sculpted by atmospheric agents over the course of millions of years that dominates a small rocky hill. From here you can admire the town and the surrounding hills including the characteristic mountains of San Pantaleo.
  • LabENur Museum: It was created to illustrate the Nuragic Civilization in the aspects related to daily life. It also houses a small ethnographic section.

AFTERNOON EVENING

VIEWPOINT THE MOON VALLEY OF AGGIUS

strangely shaped rocks and scenic roads

Among the things to do in the Orange Flag village of Aggius certainly at the top is the route on the scenic road of the Valle della Luna . For the naturalists of the Sardinian universities it is a “unicum”, comparable with a few other similar areas in the peninsula and in the European continent. But the strange and bizarre shapes of the granite emergencies that characterize it, their diffusion within a large basin enclosed by a crown of granite ridges, changing as the light changes throughout the day, give it a certain spectacularity , and a highly suggestive aspect that is also unique and singular. There The Moon Valley is a flat but not uniform expanse, in full harmony with the morphology of the surrounding Gallura plateau, falling in the heart of the municipal territory of the Orange flag of Aggius village, circumscribed by a series of rounded hills, from the jagged mountain ranges of the Resegone di Aggius and from Rock of Pulchiana , sites in themselves of great landscape and naturalistic value. From its viewpoint, between an aperitif and a snack, you will admire all this splendor, including the panoramic road just traveled.

  • Reachable in : Any motorized or non-motorized vehicle.
  • Parking : Present
  • A walk is planned : No
  • Ideal time: All day.
  • Refreshment point in the surroundings : Present in the Valle Della Luna viewpoint.

AGGIUS

The splendid village immersed in granite stones

In the heart of Gallura there is a characteristic village, which will impress you with the care of its granite stone houses, considered among the most beautiful in the area. Not surprisingly, Aggius’ economy is based on extraction and granite processing, but the country is specialized and also famous for production of carpets , and in general for the art of weaving. Not only that, the country has also received the Orange Flag award from the Italian Touring club. Walking through the magnificent village you should not miss the ethnographic museum named after Oliva Carta Cannas, inside which original objects and machinery are exhibited that tell the history, culture and traditions of the whole Gallura. Another city museum, unique of its kind, is the one dedicated to banditry housed in the building of the ‘old magistrate’. Nearby a natural paradise, the Moon Valley of Aggius, archaeological sites and Gallura stazzi. It will be an immersion in the soul of Sardinia.

  • Historic Center: In the historic center of the town, the predominant element is the exposed granite , present in the walls of the buildings and in the pavements of streets, alleys and squares. Walking in the narrow streets will allow you to explore the small town, between art and tradition visible and exposed everywhere.
  • Parish of Santa Vittoria : According to the documents found in the Bishop’s Curia , it was built in 1536. The internal structure is in a Romanesque-Baroque Latin cross style with three naves delimited by very high arches
  • The church of the Madonna d’Itria: Isolated from the others, it was built in 1750 by the Tirotto family, in thanks to the Madonna for the return of a family member who had fallen into the hands of the Saracens.
  • Banditry Museum: Without running the risk of mythologizing the figure of the outlaw and enhancing his deeds, the museum’s objective is to spread positive values for the construction of a mentality that favors the affirmation of legality and public morality in each level. In a territory like that of Gallura, protagonist of the phenomenon of banditry for about three centuries , this cultural pole fits perfectly, offering visitors and residents an overview of documents, photos, videos, objects and testimonies of the past, but above all trying to stimulate reflections on a future to be built together.
  • MEOC: The Oliva Carta Cannas Ethnographic Museum is a true treasure of the island, located inside a structure that is evocative due to the size of the exhibition spaces and the particular care with which it was created, which masterfully integrates the majesty of the granite, with green spaces. The museum exhibition contains all the richness of Gallura’s history, traditions and popular culture, from 1600 to the present day.
  • Degna Park: An excellent location to take a picnic break and enjoy the various paths immersed in unspoiled and spectacular nature . In addition to this, a couple of lakes with a riot of life among swans, ducks, fish and turtles.
  • The Panoramic Road in the Moon Valley: The magic of immense granite rocks smoothed into strange shapes over the course of millions of years. In a magnificent road to travel by car / motorbike / camper of about 3 km you can enjoy a unique spectacle : a landscape and a view that is more unique than rare.

CASTELSARDO

a medieval stronghold, one of the most beautiful villages in Italy

Perhaps in Roman times it was the mythical Tibula , in the Middle Ages it was certainly an impregnable fortress for centuries, protected by mighty walls and 17 towers, until the advent of modern weapons. The original nucleus of Castelsardo was built around the Doria castle , dating back, according to tradition, to 1102, but more likely to the end of the 13th century, the current seat of the suggestive museum of Mediterranean weaving , one of the most visited in Sardinia. One of the most beautiful villages in Italy is a medieval stronghold, characterized by nature, history, artisan and religious traditions: welcome to Castelsardo .

  • Museum of Mediterranean weaving: The Museum of Mediterranean weaving, MIM, located inside the Doria fortress, is the ideal place to preserve the ancient tradition of weaving.
  • Doria Castle : The place and perhaps a first fortification were founded in 1102, the castle as such only in the thirteenth century (probably around 1270) by the noble Genoese Doria family as “Castel Genovese” or “Castrum Januae” with great strategic importance. Until the fifteenth century, the city and the castle were the seat of the Doria family and served to dominate the possessions in northern Sardinia.
  • Cathedral of Sant’Antonio Abate: The bell tower overlooking the sea, closed by a majolica dome and with the underlying crypts, which house the ‘Maestro di Castelsardo’ museum, will amaze you.

OLD TOWN
ALGHERO

Discovering an ancient fortress

Alghero’s Old Town ” is the charming old town of Alghero, surrounded by seven large towers and ancient walls that still stand on the edge of the sea and which date back to the Catalan-Aragonese conquests of the sixteenth century. The narrow cobbled streets and alleys of the historic center are buzzing late into the night. The traffic-free area is perfect for enjoying a pleasant walk, where you can find perfect gifts in the many craft shops , taste Sardinian products in typical restaurants and visit the ancient churches.

  1. Piazza Civica : In its enchanting historic center, this square is certainly the ideal starting point, near the Port of Alghero. In the past there were the most important institutional offices of the city and from here, towards the historic center, you can admire the historic buildings dating back to the Catalan / Aragonese and Savoy domination.
  2. Cathedral of Santa Maria: The symbol of Alghero, dating back to the 11th century, famous for its high bell tower.
  3. Via Carlo Alberto : The most important and popular street in the historic center, here you can walk, admire, discover and buy typical souvenirs of the Alghero tradition.
  4. Church of San Francesco : One of the greatest examples of Gothic-Catalan architecture in Sardinia. It is a complex consisting of the church and a convent next to the church, probably built at the end of the 12th century and which has always marked and proposed the human, evangelical and social encounter of the Franciscan friars with the people.
  5. San Michele Church: It is one of the main sacred buildings of Alghero, as well as one of the greatest examples of Baroque art in Sardinia, its dome is very famous, one of the most famous images of the Sardinian-Catalan city.
  6. Archaeological Museum of Alghero: A magnificent museum, which was created to acquire, preserve and communicate the historical, social and cultural memory of the city.
  7. Torre Del Sulis: Also known as the Sperone. It is located in the square of the same name and an excellent starting point for discovering the ramparts, between sunset walks and artisanal ice creams. It is the first tower east of the south face of the walls of Alghero, as well as one of the 8 towers that have come down to the present day and are present in the historic center of Alghero. Once, together with the walls, they represented the fortification of the city.
  8. Aquarium of bright red coral : The aquarium, set up inside the San Giacomo tower, is the first live coral aquarium in Italy open to the public. A unique project of its kind that will give anyone the opportunity to admire several specimens of red coral from the living Mediterranean, the Corallium Rubrum.
  9. Bastioni and Belvedere : One of the few centers in Italy to have preserved almost intact walls and towers that have always surrounded it. Today its ramparts, dedicated to the great navigators, Colombo, Pigafetta, Magellano and Marco Polo, have become a suggestive promenade.

COASTAL ALGHERO / BOSA

a future unesco heritage site

Proposed long ago as a Unesco and humanity heritage, this coast road is a kaleidoscope of colors and a riot of the senses to be experienced in all seasons as well as the protagonist of impressive car commercials. We are talking about the provincial road 105 , which halfway becomes 49 and commonly known as Litoranea Alghero / Bosa : a gray ribbon suspended between the sea and the mountains, the scene of irresistible views, especially at sunset. There are numerous viewpoints along the road and each offers splendid and incredible views of remote coves, landscapes rich in Mediterranean scrub, cliffs and flat rocks. It is a landscape with very few buildings, which has only a few stone sheepfolds overlooking the sea, almost sentries in the silence. A Must in the surroundings of Bosa and Alghero.

  • Reachable in : Any motorized or non-motorized vehicle.
  • Parking : Present
  • A walk is planned : No
  • Ideal time: All day.
  • Refreshment point in the surroundings : Absent along the coast road apart from some beaches (La Speranza, S’Abba Drucche).

BOSA

An enchanting and picturesque village where tradition and modernity blend with curiosity and charm.

You know Paul Klee? He was a German artist and a favorite of painting, collage and engravings. The lively canvas representing colorful houses and a castle is the best emblem of Bosa . A river that passes in the middle, the low houses of the tannery on one side, the medieval quarter on the other, a massive bulk of a castle positioned on a hill dominating everything. Welcome to Bosa, one of the most beautiful villages in Italy .

  • Sa Costa Historic Center: Entering the narrow streets of the Sa Costa district , you take a leap into the past: you return to the Middle Ages with an additional charm: Art and Tradition. You get lost pleasantly among the beautiful streets paved , in a magnificent walk through alleys, arcades , squares and steep stairways .
  • Ponte Vecchio : A bridge so beautiful that it was included by Skyscanner among the 30 most beautiful bridges in Italy , together with those of Venice, the old bridge of Florence and many others.
  • Conce Museum: Housed in the buildings once used for the tanning of skins, visiting this museum you will take a trip back in the historical activity of Bosa. A path will show you the processing techniques.
  • Malaspina Castle: Built around the 12th century by the Tuscan Malaspina family , from its position at the top to a hill, it was possible to control all the lands and possible enemy incursions. Now there is very little left, if not the backbone, the city walls and imposing stone towers .
  • Casa Deriu Museum : IHe illustrates the local artistic and handicraft production. Divided into 3 floors between temporary exhibitions and filet di Bosa, furnishings and decorations of the stately building and a single floor dedicated to Melkiorre Melis , the most representative figure of the Sardinian artistic panorama.
  • Duomo and other churches: The cathedral of Bosa represents a “rare” example of Piedmontese Baroque style. Inside there is an imposing altar and several frescoes by Emilio Scherer. Also of interest are the Cathedral of San Pietro, the Church of Our Lady of the Rosary, the Church of San Giovanni Battista and the Church of Santa Maria degli Angeli with the adjoining Convent of the Capuchins.

TINNURA

A small village and "open-air" museum

Tinnura , a village of just 250 inhabitants, one of the smallest on the island, stands on a basaltic plateau and overlooks the fertile valley of Modolo . The village is an ‘open-air’ modern art museum : in the evocative streets and paved squares, you will admire monuments and statues of Sardinian artists (including Simplicio Derosas and Pinuccio Sciola) and picturesque murals paintings on the facades of the houses, depicting moments of rural life and the village . You will also be impressed by the variety of colors of the paved floors in red trachyte , white marble and gray basalt of the streets, along which, in spring, you will notice the vegetable fibers exposed to the sun to dry and then be used in the packaging of the baskets.

  • Murals: In the evocative streets (especially the central street) and paved squares, you will admire picturesque murals painted on the facades of the houses, depicting moments of rural life and the village.

FLUSSIO

The village of the art of weaving and excellent Malvasia

It is seamlessly connected to Tinnùra , with which it shares the main road that crosses both inhabited centers (state road 292). Flussio is a small town of less than 500 inhabitants in the Planargia that lies on a gentle slope between the lower valley of the Temo river and the basaltic buttress of Pedra Senta . A fertile territory, where the asphodel harvest is practiced, whose dried stems are the raw material for the creation of characteristic and elaborate baskets, called corbule, and baskets: it is no coincidence that Flussio owes its fame mainly to the art of weaving , practiced by the women of the town and handed down over the centuries.

  • Murals: Also in this village, as in Tinnura, you can admire, in limited quantities, picturesque murals painted on the facades of the houses.
  • Asphodel Museum : A double mural created by Pina Monne to celebrate the passage of Tinnura from the province of Nuoro to that of Oristano.
  • Archaeological sites: The territory was inhabited since prehistoric times, as evidenced by numerous constructions from the Bronze Age, such as the nuraghi Giannas , Murciu , Caddàris and Carcheras , the Giants’ tombs of sos Trainos and sa Figu Bianca and the megalithic wall, probably of age nuragica, near the parish church of San Bartolomeo .
  • Viewpoint Path of Malvasia: At the end of the village and near the church of San Bartolomeo there is a short but fantastic pedestrian path, facing the incredible scenic beauty of the Planargia valley.

SAN SALVATORE DI SINIS

Welcome to the Sardinian Far West

The Sardinian far west in a village inhabited only a few days in September, on the occasion of the Corsa degli Scalzi . San Salvatore di Sinis, is a small village built in a sacred area since the Nuragic age and transformed for over two decades (1967-90), into set of ‘spaghetti western’. The resemblance to American frontier landscapes meant that it was rented to film producers, becoming Arizona or New Mexico village (saloon included) in films such as ‘Colt Garter’ (1968). Once the genre went out of fashion, it remained an attraction for onlookers, scenography in the twentieth century, a place of worship for millennia.

  • Church of San Salvatore: Built in the second seventeenth century, built on a prehistoric sanctuary carved into the rock. Under the left aisle, from a ladder, you enter the hypogeum which has traces of attendance that go up to the Neolithic. A corridor leads, through rectangular and circular rooms (one with a well), to the main room with a spring : in the Nuragic age it was used for the pagan cult of water. Then, in the Punic era, the area was dedicated to Sid , the healing god, and in the same vein the Romans practiced the cult of Asclepius.
  • Sas Cumbessias : The church is surrounded by sas cumbessias , small and unadorned houses built at the end of the 17th century, used as accommodation for pilgrims during novenas, in honor of San Salvatore, between August and September. In the ‘twenty years of cinema’ of the village, they were an integral part of the western scenography.
  • The barefoot race: One of the most evocative and heartfelt identity events in Sardinia. The procession involves over 800 curridoris in white habit, who accompany the simulacrum of the saint on a long dirt road from the church of Santa Maria Assunta di Cabras to the hamlet. And they bring it back to the parish the following day.
  1. Colt Garter Film : The 1968 western film shot in San Salvatore di Sinis.
  2. The barefoot race: discover the event at the end of August.

ITINERARY DAY 9

MORNING

MAMOIADA

Ancestral rites, culinary delicacies and centuries-old traditions

Tradition and passion in the center of Sardinia: a magnificent and hospitable village 16 kilometers from Nuoro will captivate you with art, culinary delicacies, ancestral rites and the beautiful streets of the center. A land where the ‘shepherd’s paths’ develop in the reliefs, roads of transhumance that have become trekking and biking itineraries. You will be welcome in the land of cheese, carasau, mamuthones and the splendid art depicted through the murals in a real open-air museum.

  • Museum of masks: A point of contact between Sardinian traditions and other Mediterranean regions represented by carnival masks and unveiled in a unique place of culture. The museum of the Masks of the Mediterranean in Mamoiada , is a must to visit that between Mamuthones and Issohadores , focuses attention on the common matrix between island rites, in particular barbaricini, and those typical of other civilizations of more or less nearby lands, bathed by the same sea. Below the link on timetables and costs.
  • Mask of the Mamuthone : It is the first real monument that is encountered at the entrance, the symbol, or the Mask of the Mamuthone. Excellent instagrammable point to share on your social networks.
  • Sa Perda Pintà (or Stele di Boeli): The Stele of Boeli, better known as sa Perda Pintà , that is ‘the decorated stone’, is a carved and engraved granite megalith dating back to the culture of Ozieri, that is to the final Neolithic (3000 BC approximately) . It is the only one that has survived intact, definitely the largest and most representative of a series of similar slabs found in the territory of the Mamoiadino village.
  • Murals, sculptures and monuments: Mamoiada is not known as the nearby Orgosolo for its murals but they are still interesting through a simple walk in the center of the town. You will admire several sculptures that form an interesting itinerary.
  • Visit to the cellars: for some years Mamoiada has rediscovered the culture of wine and grapevine. Several wineries offer experiences in the vineyard and combine the visit with the tasting of their wines.

VILLAGE OF ORGOSOLO

Cradle of archaic traditions that offers glimpses of a timeless Sardinia

The story told on the walls of a town-museum . Orgosolo reveals a deep bond with its Barbary roots and with the customs and traditions of the past: it is the homeland of canto a Tenore , a Unesco World Heritage Site, as well as a country of murals . The village, of four thousand and 500 inhabitants, is famous all over the world for the evocative paintings that adorn the streets and squares, houses in the historic center and the facades of new buildings. They tell of politics and culture, intimate dissent and popular struggles, malaise and social justice, daily life and pastoral traditions. At the end of the 19th century, the town rose to prominence due to banditry: the director Vittorio De Seta, in ‘Banditi a Orgosolo’ (1961), describes its struggle in defense of the lands expropriated by the state. During the twentieth century, the still active cultural ferment of muralism developed, originally an instrument of protest. Its center is a must for anyone passing through Barbagia.

Various artists, both local and international, have helped to create an open-air museum: you will admire a heritage of 150 works, which are striking for their liveliness of colors and stylistic value.
  • Carasau Bread Museum: A small well-kept museum and a beautiful house that houses it. Here you will have the opportunity to live an extraordinary experience with the passion for local traditions and the hospitality of the lady who runs it.
